Dr Lennox Garane

Dr Lennox Garane was a respected medical doctor, public servant, and anti-corruption whistleblower who became known for exposing alleged corruption and procurement irregularities within the North West Department of Health. Deeply committed to ethical governance and accountable public healthcare, Garane raised concerns about the misuse of public funds, irregular contracts, and alleged political interference affecting health services in the province.
In 2018, Dr Garane reportedly made repeated attempts to escalate his concerns through official government and parliamentary channels. Among those he approached were former Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete, and then Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Thandi Modise. His efforts reflected a belief that constitutional institutions should uphold accountability and investigate wrongdoing in public administration.
On 15 July 2018, Dr Garane was shot and killed outside his home in Rustenburg, North West. Reports indicated that gunmen ambushed him in what was widely suspected to be a targeted assassination connected to his whistleblowing activities. Civil society organisations, healthcare professionals, and anti-corruption advocates condemned the killing and called for stronger protections for whistleblowers. Many viewed Garane’s death as part of a broader pattern of intimidation and violence directed at individuals who challenge corruption within state institutions.
Despite the dangers he faced, Dr Lennox Garane continued to pursue accountability through lawful and institutional channels. His courage demonstrated a deep commitment to public service, ethical leadership, and the belief that healthcare resources should benefit citizens rather than corrupt networks.
Today, Dr Lennox Garane is remembered as a brave whistleblower and dedicated public servant whose willingness to confront corruption came at the ultimate cost. His legacy continues to symbolise the importance of integrity, transparency, and the protection of those who speak out in defence of public accountability.
