Babita Deokaran was a dedicated public servant at the Gauteng Department of Health, serving as Acting Chief Financial Officer. In the course of her work, she identified more than R2 billion in suspicious transactions, including over R100 million in questionable payments linked to Tembisa Hospital. Committed to accountability and ethical governance, Babita flagged these concerns through official channels. Just days later, on 23 August 2021, she was killed outside her Johannesburg South home shortly after taking her daughter to school. Her death sent shockwaves across South Africa and ignited national outrage. But the message intended to silence her instead amplified the urgent call for transparency, protection, and justice. Babita Deokaran’s courage exposed deep flaws in public systems. Her legacy stands as a powerful reminder: whistleblowers are not troublemakers — they are guardians of the public good.
