Marumo Eric Phenya

Marumo Eric Phenya was a businessman, father, and whistleblower who chose to speak out against alleged corruption despite knowing the dangers that often face those who challenge powerful networks. He became linked to exposing irregularities in a multimillion-rand Department of Home Affairs IT tender involving firewall hardware, software licences, and maintenance contracts worth close to R200 million. (South African Lawyer)
Phenya and his wife reportedly raised concerns about possible tender manipulation, conflicts of interest, and irregular relationships connected to the contract. In the weeks before his death, the family allegedly received threatening messages serious enough for a conspiracy-to-commit-murder case to be opened with police. (The Citizen)
On 17 October 2022, shortly after dropping his children at school in Roodepoort, Gauteng, Phenya was ambushed at an intersection on Hendrik Potgieter Road. Gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in a targeted attack, killing him in a hail of bullets. The assassination shocked South Africa and became another painful reminder of the risks faced by whistleblowers exposing corruption and tender fraud. (IOL)
Despite the threats against him, Marumo Eric Phenya refused to remain silent. His actions reflected extraordinary courage and a commitment to accountability at a time when many feared speaking out. By exposing alleged corruption within a major government tender process, he stood not only for transparency but for the principle that public resources should serve the people rather than private interests.
Years after his murder, his family continued to demand justice. In 2026, nearly four years after the killing, police arrested a suspect linked to the assassination, reviving hopes that those responsible — including any possible masterminds — could eventually be brought to account.
Marumo Eric Phenya is more than a victim of political violence. He is a brave South African who risked his life to expose wrongdoing, protect public funds, and defend the values of integrity, accountability, and justice.
