Moss Phakoe
Moss Phakoe was a respected anti-corruption activist, community leader, and regional secretary of the African National Congress in Rustenburg, known for his outspoken stance against corruption and maladministration in local government. Deeply committed to accountability and ethical governance, Phakoe spent years raising concerns about alleged corruption, tender irregularities, and abuse of public resources within the Rustenburg Local Municipality.
Phakoe reportedly compiled extensive evidence detailing allegations of corruption involving senior municipal officials, including claims linked to procurement processes and misuse of municipal funds. In March 2009, he submitted a dossier containing these allegations to then Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Sicelo Shiceka, hoping national authorities would intervene and investigate the alleged wrongdoing.
Investigations and court proceedings that followed revealed disturbing allegations about political interference and corruption networks within the municipality. In 2012, former Rustenburg mayor Lazarus “Lazzy” Mokgosi and municipal bodyguard Bongani Moyo were convicted in connection with Phakoe’s murder, reinforcing suspicions that the assassination was linked to his whistleblowing activities.
Despite increasing tensions and the risks surrounding his activism, Moss Phakoe refused to remain silent. He believed public officials should serve communities honestly and transparently, and he continued speaking out even when facing intimidation and political hostility.
